Conference Overview:

Monday, August 12, 2019:   Making Math Discourse Come Alive in Your Classroom

Speaker: Steve Wyborney                        Grade Band (K - 8)

Math discourse is vital part of the learning process.  However, making
rich, authentic math discourse come alive in the classroom is not an easy
task.  This highly interactive workshop will feature many strategies for
fostering deep, rich math discourse in the classroom.  Participants will
engage in a wide range of rich tasks, extend their understanding through
rich discussion, and learn how to implement effective practices for
promoting math discourse in their own classroom.   In addition,
participants will leave with over 100 ready-to-use classroom resources.
Come prepared to engage with innovative, intriguing math tasks – and
be ready to share your thinking with others!

Tuesday, August 13, 2019:   The Power of Progressions: Untangling the Knotty Areas of Teaching and Learning

Speaker: Graham Fletcher                       Grade Band (K - 8)

As more teachers look to add high-yield tasks to their repertoire,
the struggle to make it all work becomes real. Let's examine how
problem-based lessons can be used throughout the scope of a unit
and how we can harness their power to move student thinking
forward. We'll identify strategies and explore some tasks that help
us find a healthy balance between application, conceptual
                                                understanding, and procedural fluency.

Wednesday, August 14, 2019:   Integrating Desmos and Desmos Calculators into Math Instruction

Speakers: Desmos Representatives                      Grade Band (3-12)

Desmos will run two concurrent sessions this day.  One session will
incorporate an explicit focus on using Desmos in grades 3-8 and on
the Desmos 4-function and scientific calculators and the other will
focus on using Desmos in grades 8-12 and will focus on using the
Desmos graphing calculator. During these workshops, the presenters
will introduce pedagogical and technological techniques for increasing
student achievement and interest in mathematics. In particular, the
presenters will illustrate how free Desmos technology can enable that
                                          process.

Thursday, August 15, 2019:   Making the Most of Math Workshop

Speaker: Jennifer Lempp                        Grade Band (K - 8)

Math workshop is an instructional model that integrates the best of
                                               number-sense routines, problem-solving, classroom discourse,
guided-math groups, and intentional reflection.  This workshop will
briefly overview the math workshop model before diving into the
specifics of implementation and helping prepare participants for
successfully integrating math workshop into their own classrooms.

Jennifer, is the author of Math Workshop: Five Steps to                                                                       Implementing Guided Math, Learning Stations, Reflection, and                                                         More. She also currently serves as a Coordinator in the Office of                                                       School Support in Fairfax County Public Schools, Virginia.
