MSG Meeting Minutes

November 18, 2016

Math Day:

• Recommend having a stronger emphasis on Math Talk

• We need to re-teach people about CRA

• Code 19 was very effective so everyone would like a database for these resources -> we will add a page to the website so that people can send in resources.

• People think that a Friday in October is the best day for Math Day -> Math Day 2017 will be on October 6, 2017.

• We will start asking for speaker proposals this spring

• The group would like the conference to be k-8 for next year with a focus on the new SOL Standards

• Thoughts on the share session

• Maybe have a working lunch?

• Advertise share session topics in advance

• Look at most missed SOL concepts?

Upcoming courses:

Spring:

Math 537 – Rational Numbers and Proportional Reasoning will meet on Wednesday nights in a blended format for the grant schools and on Thursday night in VA Beach.

Summer:

Educ. V63 – Math for Struggling Learners K-2 lead by Lois Williams on site here and possible in VA Beach as well.

Recommended courses:

The group really wants Math for Struggling Learners for other age groups (grades 3-4, middle school, etc).

NCTM Research Meeting in San Antonio (April 3 – 5)

NCSM Annual Meeting in San Antonio (April 3 – 5)

NCTM in San Antonio (April 5 – 8)

Update from TI

There is a possibility that TI will hold a mini-conference at William and Mary next year. It would be a 2 day conference

Book Study

We talked about Ch. 2 of the book and conversation focused on assessment and grading.
