Call to Order and Introductions – Sam Rhodes

Change of date for March Meeting – Conflict with VCMS

  • Change to March 16

Update on Grant and courses

  • Leadership 3 – Spring 2018

  • Probability and Statistics – Summer 2018

  • VDOE has been approving Math Specialist certification for Math majors without any of the Math Specialist math classes – will be fixed in the near future, but will likely continue for the next year

Reminder about Math Specialist Program

  • In jeopardy of ending due to low numbers

  • We are willing to go to the school division or offer online classes

  • 8 courses (12 for teachers without a related Master’s degree)

Update on Math Day 2018: September 28, 2018

  • Keynote: Sherry Parrish (Number Talks)

  • Idea: Have two keynotes – one for K-4, one for 5+

  • Breakout sessions throughout the day for divisions to meet with keynote speaker

  • Possibly raise admission price to $100

Planning Summer Math Institute

  • Possibility of getting grant to bring in speakers, cover room and board

  • “Homegrown Virginia Authors”: Jennifer Lempp (Fairfax), Lois Williams, Spencer Davidson

  • Possible topics (most requested from Math Day 2017 surveys): Number sense, Algebra tiles, ELL, PBL, growth mindset, CRA, Grouping from teaching math, Problem Solving, Technology, Probability, Rational numbers

  • State of Geometry in Virginia – strengths, weaknesses, what needs to be done to improve it at the state level

  • What classes are being offered in pre-service programs around the state?

  • High school Geometry coaches

  • Offer workshops for teachers, provide more support for how to help struggling students

  • NSF grant proposal due in August

  • STEM teacher preparation program

  • Possible Theme: CRA – Concrete, Representational, Abstract

  • K-5: August 13

  • 6-12: August 14

  • Ideas for secondary: Slope-intercept, (Virtual) Algebra Tiles/Blocks, 2 color counters, hands-on equations, pegboards, Mira, CBL, Geogebra, Spheros

  • Possible Locations: Smithfield, WJCC, Poquoson?

  • Give incentive for host division: free spots?

Work on Mission Statement

  • Current Statement: “The Tidewater Team for Mathematics Education consists of math teachers, specialists, and supervisors located in Eastern Virginia who collaborate and share our collective knowledge and resources to implement research-based best practices, curricula, mathematics instruction and assessment for the success of each student.”

  • How do we remediate for students who do not have the prerequisite knowledge while still engaging our stronger students?

  • Redbird Math (K-5, includes up to 7th grade material) – adaptive learning

  • The meaning of personalized learning and how it affects students’ overall academic achievement
