Math Study Group

November 3, 2017

Call to Order and Introductions – Led by Sam Rhodes

Report on VCMS Fall Meeting – (Fiona Nichols)

  • Math Workshop Structures – ideas from Jennifer Lempp

  • Focus on Number Sense – Replace “warm up” with number sense routines

  • Math discourse (incorporating student argument and justification)

  • Teacher isn’t a group

  • Daily reflection built in every day

  • “Look fors” to be distributed within G Drive (emailed, linked to, and posted on site)

  • Region 2 Meeting

  • What could be placed on VCMS Site (resources, programs, etc.)

  • In order to be an NCMS affiliate… need a participant list

  • Main contact(s) in Region 2 districts?

Report on Math Day 2017

  • Feedback

  • Vendors?

  • VCMS is subsidized through vendors

  • Be sure to build in time to encourage people to visit them

  • Are we outgrowing our space?

  • Two days may work well (elementary & secondary)

  • Not a half

  • Repeat sessions may be helpful as

  • What does the Keynote look like?

  • President of NCTM – Principles to Action

  • VDOE

  • Sherry Parish – number talks and fraction talks

  • Profile of a graduate may work to bring in Secondary Folks

  • Submit topic ideas here!

  • Review of proposals

  • Must be in September

  • Websites up – accepting proposals

Spring Course – update

STEM Certificate Program

  • Would teachers be interested in a four course STEM certificate?

  • What would the benefit be for teachers? Buy-in?

  • House bill on the SOQs would get some schools interested?

  • No certification programs yet… This could fill

  • Concerns

  • Costs

  • Understanding the role/usefulness

  • Time – could we be putting more course online?

  • Logistics

  • Concerns with accountability. Teachers are scared

  • Replacing standardized tests with performance based assessments

  • George (and Sam) go off the deep end 😉

What can we do to support?

  • Need as many methods courses as possible!

  • Week-long program this summer (like the literacy one)

  • Partner with districts and share our expertise

  • How do we get the teachers to go?

  • Food & Points!

  • Make a theme – dress up!!

  • Free Stuff!!!

  • Now let’s make plan!

  • First or second week in August

  • Link to standards/strands

  • Connect math day presentations

  • Link to special ed and co-teachers

  • Maybe ask districts… If you pay x you can send as many teachers as you’d like
